Trafficking

Human trafficking is the second largest source of illegal income worldwide and one of the largest sources of income for organized crime. The highest rate of trafficking has to do with women and children, since they are the most vulnerable social groups. Conditions such as poverty, unemployment, lack of education, corruption etc. (push factors) in the origin countries on the one hand and promises of better jobs, better standard of life, the improved education, the increasing demand for cheap labor etc. (pull factors) in the destination countries on the other hand, contribute to this illegal phenomenon. The most common form of human trafficking is the sex trade, where children and women are taken across borders and held in captivity to be sold for sex, although there is a small percentage of women who do that on their will. It is estimated that 2/3 of women trafficked for prostitution worldwide annually come from Eastern Europe (e.g. Russia, Moldova, Ukraine), three-quarters have never worked as prostitutes before.
